President's
Perspective
It’s almost time to
close our books on 2007. It has been a great year for HR-PAGE, the Emporia
Chapter of SHRM. I appreciate all the hard work that everyone has put into
keeping our chapter going for this year. It takes a lot of volunteers for a
chapter of our size to cover the many duties associated with our SHRM
affiliation, and Chapter Achievement Plan.
This year, we had
some great speakers with relevant topics. We learned about Addressing
Performance and Behavioral Concerns; Consumer-Driven Healthcare; Hiring and
Discipline; and Worker’s Compensation Laws in Kansas. We also heard about
Retention and Recruitment Issues, and had a very touching program on Why
Every Business Should be Involved in Domestic Violence Issues.
We spent a very
enjoyable evening at our Annual Social held at the Emporia Country Club. If
you were not able to make it this year, you should watch for the date next
year. The speakers are great at our monthly meetings, but there never seems
to be enough time to just visit with the other members. That’s what the
Annual Social is all about. We also collected toys and clothing for our
chosen community service project, the Emporia Social Service Club.
Many thanks to
Hopkins Manufacturing for their donation of a door prize and table
centerpiece for the KS State SHRM Conference. The state conference will be
held in Wichita in September 2008. There are a lot of opportunities to get
involved with SHRM on the state council, in addition to serving on a
committee at the local level. Getting involved can be as simple as serving
as a Core Leadership Advocate. This truly involves only a few hours of work,
but each one is important to keep our membership informed on important and
timely topics. Volunteering is really the best way to get to know others in
the group. Just let June Coleman-Hull know you are willing to help,
jcoleman@emporia.edu.
Have a wonderful and
safe holiday season!

The year 2007 is well underway,
and we have had some great speakers at our monthly lunch meetings. These
meetings are a nice opportunity to visit with other HR professionals in our
community, and we have seen several new faces this year. A big welcome to
all of our new members!
If you are interested in HR
issues, and haven’t already attended one of our meetings, I hope you will
join us soon. Please check the Upcoming Events schedule on this website for
dates and speakers.
Please mark your calendars for September 26-28, 2007 for the 18th
Annual Kansas State SHRM Conference in Overland Park. This year’s theme is
HReaching for the Stars, ‘A Galaxy of Opportunities.’ There will be a golf
tournament during the day on Wed. Sept. 26th, with plans for an
evening event with a speaker. The conference sessions will begin Thursday
morning, Sept. 27th, and conclude around 2:30 p.m. on Friday,
Sept. 28th. More information should be available soon on the
Kansas SHRM Council website at www.ksshrm.com.
